Our top 5 things to do in Trim
There is no where better for a staycation in Ireland than the Heritage town of Trim. From heritage sites around every corner, to beautiful walks, amazing restaurants and cafes and so much more. Here are our top 5 places to visit when you stay with us in Highfield House.
1. Trim Castle
Trim Castle is the largest Anglo-Norman Fortification in Ireland. It took Hugh de Lacy and his successors 30 years to build it. Today it is open to the public to view the sheer scale of the building. This was also the setting for the Hollywood Blockbuster- Braveheart staring Mel Gibson.
During 2021 entry to the Castle is free. Tours are not being held at the moment but you can do a self guided tour around the keep. The Castle is a short 5 minute walk from Highfield house.
2. Walk the Porchfields
Talk a leisurely stroll along the river Boyne and through the Porchfields of Trim. Make it as long or as short as you like. Here is a great map from Sport Ireland.
3. Visit Newtown
Sometimes referred to as the abandoned village, Newtown Monuments and cemetery consists of a large medieval catedral, 2 monasteries and a small church which date from 1206. Explore the site during your walk of the porchfields or make it an afternoon trip in itself.
4. Sample our local food.
There are plenty of places to eat in Trim. Award winning restaurants like The Stockhouse Restaurant, Franzinis and Jules Restaurant are only a short walk away from Highfield house. Let us know if you would like us to make a reservation for you during your stay.
5. Take a trip to the visitor centre
If you are looking for all the inside information on Trim and even attractions nearby- Trim visitor centre always provides a fantastic welcome and so much information. Situated only a short 5 minute walk from Highfield House.
